MACHINERGY "Sounds Evolution" 2014

Banale e piuttosto noioso è il primo album in studio dei portoghesi Machinergy, intitolato Sounds Evolution, e uscito autoprodotto. Il platter si compone di dieci tracce tutte piuttosto simili tra loro e un po' troppo scarche di energia per il genere proposto, un death/thrash metal industriale dall'approccio moderno e a tratti vicino al groove. C'è da dire, a difesa di questo terzetto, che il tentativo di ibridare assieme questi tre/quattro generi non era senz'altro facile, ma visto il risultato, qualcosa da rivedere sicuramente c'è. Specie nel cantato del frontman Rui Vieira, sicuramente più incisivo alle chitarre che alla voce.

Wenn sich ein Bandname aus den Begriffen 'Machine' und 'Energy' zusammensetzt, dann will der Metaller härtetechnisch auch etwas erwarten. Da könnte das Grammophon auf dem Cover eher kontraproduktiv wirken. Aber Machinergy kommen aus dem temparamentvollen Lissabon, und sie starten gleich mit kloppendem Thrash und Gitarrenrasereien. Der Drumsound ist fulminant gut gelungen, und die exakten Beats gehen fast schon mechanisch durch, was der Band einen Touch zum Industrial beschert. "Venomith" ist da so ein Kandidat, der komplett als gutes Beispiel dafür durchgeht. Völlig aus dem Rahmen fällt dagegen die Idee von "Waterwar", wo eine Sängerin fernöstlich anmutet, und später noch eine Sitar etwas zu sagen hat. Das sind zwar coole Ausbrüche, die es alleine aber nicht reißen. Dass sich da noch Einflüsse von Punk oder Death einmischen, letztere sind nur uncleaner Vocals geschuldet, muss grundsätzlich auch als gute Idee gewertet werden. Allerdings bringen sie keinen Deut mehr Roughness oder gar Ecken und Kanten mit ein. Die Portugiesen sind seit 2006 am Ball, und keine Greenhorns mehr. Ihr Thrash kommt auf den Punkt und hat klar seine Aggromomente. Doch aus Ermangelung an Zündstoff oder Proberaummief kann sich das Album etwas in die Länge ziehen. Ihr erstes Album “Rhythmotion" stammt noch aus 2010, nur eine EP und eine Split gab es in der Zwischenzeit, da war die Zeit reif für ein neues Album. Und das liegt nun mit zehn Tracks in einer absolut zeitgemäßen Produktion vor.

Portugal’s Machinergy cover the standard death/thrash bases with a respectable enthusiasm. What’s mind blowing about Sounds Evolution is just how professional it sounds, despite it being produced entirely by the band. It’s crisp and clear with a good emphasis placed on the vocals and no instrument drowning out everything else, which so often happens with the bass or drums in indie thrash recordings. Before anything else, Machinergy deserve praise for their effective sonic palette.

Rui Vieira’s voice is… do people who speak Portuguese just sing like this? The man sounds like a crossbreed of Max Cavalera (ex-Sepultura, Soulfly, etc.) and Wagner Antichrist (Sarcofago), who themselves sounded very similar. In no way is that meant as a criticism, as that vocal style has proven to be the perfect fit for death/thrash, being not quite death growls, but still more guttural than the standard thrash delivery. In fact, Machinergy’s entire shtick seems to be to effectively ape classic Brazilian thrash. Vieira employs the same bombastic, bottom heavy guitar tone that was found on Sepultura’s Schizophrenia, Helder Rodrigues’ drum sound is a dead ringer for that found on Sarcofago’s Laws of the Scourge album, and some of the more ambient/industrial touches seem to be torn straight out of Mutilator.

Usually such derivation would sound stilted, but Machinergy bring so much passion and energy to their well-written, well-produced songs, that everything I’ve mentioned becomes more of an observation than a criticism. Their material is varied and engaging, and should be respected for making ample use of their native tongue in the lyrics. While I think the band still has a way to go before finding their own true voice and style, they’re definitely coming from a good place and are certainly worthy of keeping a keen eye on.

“Sounds Revolution” é o segundo álbum do trio português oriundo de Arruda dos Vinhos. Formado atualmente por Rui Vieira (vocal/guitarra), Helder Rodrigues (bateria) e Nuno Mariano (baixo), o Machinergy executa um Thrash Metal que é tão brutal que beira o Death Metal.

Interessante que desde o início da audição do trabalho, que começa com a pegajosa faixa título, nota-se certa influência de nomes brasileiros, tais como Sepultura, Sextrash e Sarcófago (principalmente nos vocais de Rui que lembram muito os de Vágner Antichrist).

Cantando temas em português e inglês (incluindo aí mescla das duas línguas em uma composição), a banda pende para a agressividade e velocidade, deixando pouco tempo para respirar ou aliviar o pescoço. Mérito das guitarras que destilam bons riffs e da cozinha brutal e com linhas interessantes.

Músicas objetivas e na maior parte marcantes são as principais características de “Sounds Of Evolution”, que é bem produzido pela própria banda, que também mixou e masterizou o trabalho. Para quem esperava algo na linha moderna tendenciosa atual, o Machinergy veio melhor que a encomenda. Baita disco.

Португалският проект MACHINERGY реализира втория си дългосвирещ албум. Двамата основни човека зад музиката имат рецидивиращ проблем с басиста, но за този албум съставът е стабилизиран.

В опита на триото да свири динамични парчета се крие причината рифовете трудно да изплуват от общия шум. Китарните решения са повече в Death Metal маниер. Ритмиката, която, все пак, не постига върхови скорости, внася еднообразие и песните си приличат. Самото решение за звука е натоварено от твърде много обработка, добавяни ефекти и модулации. Крайният резултат е, че на момчетата им се налага да анонсират industrial влияния, каквито в чисто музикален аспект липсват. Вокалите също се ограничават между умерено високия емоционален крясък, средночестотния харш и ниското Death Metal ръмжене. За канто и дума не може да става, просто липсва решение за пеене. Звукът на китарата препълва честотите от всякакъв регистър, но липсва свирене на инструмента. Разхвърляните влияния от широк спектър екстремни стилове са гарнирани и с повтарящи заглавието на песните припеви. Самотни фолклорни мотиви са залепенr из парчето „Waterwar“, съвсем необосновано. А руския фолклорен мотив в последния трак е напълно неадекватен! Единичните сполучливи решения в албума са 4 – 5 рифови попадения, които не оправдават останалия материал.

Отлежаването на материала в студиото, вместо да го превърне в „хубаво вино“, го е направил „оцет“ с твърде много аромати. Шумното натрупване на ефекти и модулации в съчетание с еднообразните решения за различните песни, прави от „Sounds Evolution“ скучно преживяване. Pop обложката и Techno логото няма да ви дадат представа за музиката, но правилно ще предупредят метъл фена, че съдържанието е съмнително.

Rui Vieira, Helder Rodrigues and Nuno Mariano, together they are a thrash metal band called Machinergy. They come from Portugal and formed in 2006. Now their second full length is out and it is called Sounds Evolution.

Sounds Evolution contains 10 songs with an total length of 42 minutes. This album exists of really good, solid thrash. Fast, heavy guitars and rhythm section, this is pure thrash metal. Only thing that could, sometimes, be better in my opinion are the vocals. The vocals aren't bad, but in my opinion Rui Vieira must choose if he want to sing clean or if he want to growl. While, in his case, clean singing is more thrash metal, I prefer his growl, because I think it sounds better. Overall Sounds Evolution is a nice thrash metal release, just as thrash metal used to be.

Machinergy is een thrash metal trio uit Portugal. Verder is er weinig informatie op het web te ontdekken over deze formatie. Ze zijn in 2006 gestart, brachten hun eerste full-length album uit in 2010 met de titel Rhythmotion, vonden in 2012 nog even tijd om de EP Rythm Between Sounds in elkaar te draaien en komen welgeteld vier jaar later met het vervolg op het debuut getiteld Sounds Evolution. Ach, wat moet iemand eigenlijk ook nog meer aan info hebben?

Onheilspellende geluiden en wat lichte percussie waarmee schijn bedriegt. De slepende doomy intro van openingstrack Sound Evolution vormt het startschot voor een gebeuk waar je u tegen zegt. Het drumwerk bestaat voor negentig procent van de tijd uit compromisloos hakwerk. Weinig verrassingen behalve voor een paar dubbele gitaarlijnen die even voor wat meer focus zorgen. Ook de groovende mid-tempo stukken geven de tracks net wat meer jeu mee. Voornamelijk is het meer een herhaling van zetten die de band toepast en veelal blijft de snelheid gelijk waarbij een geeuw zelden te onderdrukken valt bij een gehele luistersessie. Live zal dit wellicht een compleet ander verhaal zijn.

Ook ben ik niet erg te spreken over de wijze waarop de band een einde breit aan sommige nummers en dit vaak een beetje afraffelt. Is het nu enkel kommer en kwel wat de klok slaat bij deze plaat? Nee, eigenlijk niet, mits je ervoor zorgt dat je verwachtingen niet al te hoog gespannen zijn bij aanvang. Ook pakken sommige riffs verrassend leuk uit en weten je tenen uiteindelijk toch, al zij het met moeite, over de streep te trekken.

Machinergy levert met Sounds Evolution een thrash metal plaat af die voor iedere headbanger wel te verteren valt. Snelheid, agressie, groove: allemaal prima basis ingrediënten maar het voelt desalniettemin aan als nummertje zoveel in de strekkende rij. Een evolutie der geluid hoor je dan ook helaas niet in Machinergy terug.

Machinergy is a thrash metal band from Portugal who does not have much output generated since its inception in 2006. 'Sounds Evolution' is their third creation and the title of the album does little justice. The thrash metal with some death metal influences nicely rumbles on, but lacks the necessary variation. When you hear the first three songs and already you feel you hear the same riff, then clearly something is missing. In principle there is nothing wrong with the music, if you do not expect too much. Live this band could really make a small impression, as support band anyway. The simple, somewhat groovy metal of the band might get something moving, but no more than that. The band has little songwriting skills to keep the listener’s attention and this release will therefore pass very quietly.

A product of four years hard work, this sophomore record by Portugal’s Machinergy seems to mix thrash along with death metal, a bit of melody and even some industrial in areas. I’m actually getting a little bit of a Bolt Thrower feeling for the album and even though it’s a bit raw, it is nonetheless quite punchy. The drums are heavily displayed amongst the chugging guitar and the ravenous vocal approach. The problem is, at least for me, is that there isn’t really all that much variation in the songs except for a few sections here and there which are wholly welcomed and do well to break up the monotony. There’s no doubt that brilliant guitar work can be found in some of these sections and it shows me that Machinergy certainly have a relevancy among other Portuguese acts. But for the most part, Machinergy seems to be a death/thrash album that delivers ripping portent after portent of blazing thrash and if you look at it in that context, rather than the industrial sense that you might ascertain from the band’s moniker, then you’ll find something to like here. If I picked this record up at the used record shop and didn’t know much about the band beforehand, I think I would probably dig this one a lot. It’s not the best record I’ve ever heard in the death/thrash category, but I don’t think you’re going to be complaining too much about it after the first listen… unless you don’t like female vocal chants, which do appear in just one of the cuts here on the disc. But I can’t and won’t fault them for that experimentation. Neither should you.

Desde Portugal nos llegan estos Machinergy. Thrashers convencidos…pero no se si convincentes.
Este trío no presenta este primer trabajo, “Sounds evolution”, firmemente asentado en la experiencia de sus miembros y bajo la consigna de no hacer prisioneros: Temas duros y rudos, veloces, voces guturales que parecen salidas del infierno y resultan bastante ininteligibles, canten en ingles o en portugués.
Personalmente me han dejado bastante frío. Se trata de una banda más capaz de entretener sobre un escenario, pero con poco gancho en estudio.
El inicio de “Sounds evolution”, tema titulo que abre el disco, ya nos muestra las armas del trio: riffs lentos y voces infernales que se transforman en despendoladas cabalgadas a todo trapo. La lástima es que resultan en exceso repetitivos. Hay algunos temas un poco por encima de la media: “Venomith”, “Cada Falso” pero en general la sensación de monotonía domina.
Me gustaría ser más benévolo con estos trabajos, que por otra parte cada vez suenan más y mejor en estudio. Pero creo que también tenemos derecho a exigir un poco de inspiración.

"Embora já conhecesse alguns temas desta banda, foi com curiosidade que carreguei no play do leitor de cd. O que senti foi uma incontrolável vontade de começar a danificar seriamente o que me rodeava - estava no carro a conduzir... É impressionante a descarga que apenas três "gajos" conseguem debitar e a capacidade que tem de - mesmo à distância - nos darem um "pontapé sonoro" em pleno estômago bem como nos fazerem recordar que o Thrash Metal ainda mexe em Portugal."

Portugalskie trio zaskakuje ciekawą kombinacją kilku stylistyk. Podstawą jest tu industrialny thrash, kojarzący się z „Repent” Accuser i szybszymi numerami z „Renewal” Kreatora. Sporo tu też Ministry sprzed 23 lat. Zaskakujący dodatek stanowią zwolnienia a’la Bolt Thrower. Dla urozmaicenia pojawia się też (jednorazowo) damskie wycie, a nawet surfrockowy patent w „Hammer”. Nie jest to muza wchodząca od pierwszego razu, wymaga wsłuchania się w nią. Toporność okazuje się zamierzona, a wszystkie klocki poukładane znacznie sprawniej, niż się wydawało początkowo. Słychać potencjał!

Apesar do nome "industrializado", os MACHINERGY tocam thrash metal puro. Mas têm o cuidado de primar nos pormenores, em pequenos contrastes, de modo a não caírem no proverbial "thrash-metal-soa-tudo-ao-mesmo".

A língua, por exemplo. Dos dez temas que compõem este «Sounds Evolution», apesar dos quatro títulos em português, apenas um e meio é cantado na sua língua-mãe - «Antagonista» e os refrães de «Cada Falso». É algo que os MACHINERGY poderão explorar sem medos, já que a áspera robustez da voz de Rui Vieira encaixa as palavras portuguesas tão bem quanto as inglesas, fazendo com que os nossos ouvidos não estranhem a falta da familiar sonoridade estrangeira.

Saber como e quando pôr o pé ao travão naquilo que é uma das características típicas do género - a velocidade rítmica - demonstra maturidade na composição. Quer sejam apenas as cordas que vibram mais refreadas, com o pedal duplo a metralhar por tás - como no tema-título -, quer sejam todos os instrumentos a abrandar - como em «Fúria» -, quer sejam passagens longas - «Machine Gun Anger» - ou breves momentos - «Hammer» - os MACHINERGY jogam destramente com estas variações, apostando na intensidade dos riffs em vez da sua rapidez. Algo semelhante ao death metal, sim, e é bem provável que sejam influenciados por esse estilo, mas conseguem manter-se fiéis à sua própria natureza e o resultado é indubitavelmente thrash, como referido anteriormente.

Dados os conflitos no Médio Oriente, nada melhor que sons árabes - incluindo uma voz feminina - para adornar um tema que fala sobre guerra («Waterwar»). Mas continua uma incógnita o porquê de usar a canção popular russa «Kalinka» como introdução a uma outra que fala sobre músicos poser, que ganham notoriedade pela sua imagem e não pela sua obra. Em todo o caso, não deixa de ser interessante ouvir algo tão alegre quando «Paraphernalia» é uma das músicas mais abrasivas deste álbum.

Deixando o melhor para o fim, resta mencionar o foco e árduo trabalho nos riffs - em quantidade e em qualidade - em detrimento dos solos de guitarra. O resultado é que todo o álbum está carregado de "guitarradas deluxe" sem a pompa dos solos floreados com que alguns guitarristas tanto gostam de se mostrar. O resultado é um álbum potente de uma banda que sabe o que faz.

Δεύτερο άλμπουμ για τους Πορτογάλους death thrashers, Machinergy, οι οποίοι είχαν 4 χρόνια μπροστά τους από το 2010 προκειμένου να εξελιχτούν και να εντυπωσιάσουν τους φίλους της ακραίας σκηνής. 10 κομμάτια τα οποία είναι βουτηγμένα στο deathtrash με έντονες αναφορές στους Sepultura χωρίς όμως την έμπνευση των τελευταίων. Εάν κάτι είναι χειρότερο από ένα κακό άλμπουμ είναι ένα μέτριο άλμπουμ και δυστυχώς για τους Machinergy το “Sounds Evolution” χωρίς να είναι απαραίτητα κακό, δεν έχει τίποτα καλό να παρουσιάσει πλην του εισαγωγικού κομματιού “Sounds Evolution” , άντε και του “Venomith” τα οποία, Ναι! σε εντυπωσιάζουν αλλά από εκεί και πέρα είναι σαν να ακούς το ίδιο τραγούδι άλλες 10 φορές, αν φυσικά εξαιρέσεις τα intro. Δεν έχω κάτι παραπάνω να πω για τους Machinergy. Μέτριο άλμπουμ, μέτρια και η βαθμολογία…

Machinergy: Thrash Metal Sem Firulas!

E os portugueses do Machinergy chegam com seu segundo Debut, mais precisamente lançado em 2014, sob o nome de “Sounds Evolution”.
Não espere por modernidades, mas sim pelo bom e velho Thrash Metal, soando tão ríspido e bruto que beira em alguns momentos o Death Metal, mas sem perder suas características.

Oriundos de Arruda dos Vinhos o Machinergy mostra uma capacidade incrível de soar como uma maquina insana e brutal, despejando riffs violentos, com uma cozinha mais do que consistente e variada. Sem contar às vocalizações que beiram a insanidade, com bastante influencia de Sarcófago.

E essa influencia por bandas brasileiras que também chamam atenção, é possível encontrar aqui e ali certos flertes de Sepultura, Sarcófago, Sextrash e etc.
O disco soa homogêneo e marcante, mas não espere por composições grooveadas ou cadenciadas, aqui a ideia é outra, transcendendo a violência sonora sem dó, não poupando os pescoços alheios.

A parte lírica do disco transita entre o português e o inglês, o que deixou o resultado final bem interessante e diversificado. A produção soa crua e bruta, mas em um bom nível com todos os instrumentos bem audíveis.
Resumindo um disco para se ouvir de cabo a rabo. Thrash Metal sem firulas!

Review CRUSHING IRON MUSIC

Following old school metal theme of my previous post here, allow me to introduce Machinergy– an old school thrash metal trio from Portugal!
This band was formed in 2006 and so far released two full length studio albums: Rhythmotion (2010) and Sounds Evolution (2014). As the name suggests, this trio’s music combines the “mechanical”, or industrial, sound element you can find in bands such as Rammstein and Fear Factory alongside with Thrash, Groove metal and even Punk. Rhythmotion, their debut album, has all these elements. It sounds somewhat experimental and left me under the impression that Machinergy‘s musical style was still in its formation stages.

Their second album, Sounds Evolution, however, is a conceptually solid record where the industrial elements are only there to spice up the Thrash/Death metal foundation, giving the record its own unique character. The record contains 10 tracks of raw old-school metal, which often resembles Benediction and Fear Factory in their Soul of a New Machine era. While being machine-like, and rhythmically monotonous, these 10 tracks still manage to stay catchy, distinctive and easy to remember, which makes the record interesting.

For those of you who view monotonicity in music as a flaw, this will remain the downside of this album – the drum rhythms are pretty basic and repetitive and there could be more variety in the guitar riffs, especially in the first 3 tracks. If you tend to judge quickly, I would recommend skipping forward to the fourth track –Venomith – from there on the album becomes much more interesting while the raw style is still maintained. Perhaps if Venomith was the second or third track to stir things up, the entire record would have been introduced better and the impression of monotonicity could have been avoided. With that said, the record is still energetic and fun to listen to, and is a big step forward compared to its predecessor.
The bands hard work is felt not only in music, though- the albums YouTube video shows the trio play every song on the album. Remind me, when was the last time you saw a whole album video/playlist that is actually worth watching? But it’s not just the album video- their internet presence in general shows that they put a lot of effort into the bands promotion, and you can easily find interviews, videos, live shows and anything that shows what this trio is capable of. With this amount of work, and the fact that I personally really enjoyed the album, I truly hope their efforts will be rewarded.

There are things that still require some work, of course, before they can reach the major league level; the performance (mainly vocals and guitars) that could be more solid and precise, the rhythm section that could be a bit less monotonous, and better sticking to grammar rules in lyrics, which seems to be underestimated and overlooked (and YES! It is essential for a band that wants to reach professional heights these days) but again, the progress and difference between the first and second album speaks for itself. Also I can’t overlook the fact that releasing two records in this quality in their total nine years of existence, for an unsigned band, is not trivial at all, so maybe I should stop being a judgmental snob.
Bottom line is this- if you’d ask me weather I enjoyed listening to this album, the answer would be a loud and solid YES!
